We’ve reached the quarter final stage of the 2024 British Open in Birmingham, with eight players looking to secure semi-final spots on the first day of quarter final action. The opening match gets underway at 17:30 (GMT+1) from The Rep Theatre, with action available to watch live on SQUASHTV.
An all-Egyptian clash opens play on day five as No.5 seed Nour El Tayeb will take on Salma Hany. The lower ranked Egyptian defeated No.4 seed Nele Gilis in the third round to earn a spot in the last eight and will face El Tayeb for the fourth time this season. El Tayeb has won the previous two encounters and will be itching to convert to claim a place in her first Platinum semi-final of the season.
Joel Makin became the first Welshman to reach the last eight of a British Open since 2022 after beating Youssef Ibrahim in the third round. The World No.9 will need to produce his A game tonight if his run is to continue as he faces World Champion Diego Elias. The pair met in the second round last year, with Elias coming through in four games at Makin’s home club, Edgbaston Priory. Elias will be determined to back up his win in Cairo a few weeks ago and claim a first British Open title.
Current women’s World No.1 Nour ElSherbini was tested by tonight’s opponent Olivia Weaver at the recent World Championships, coming through in five games. Weaver has been one of the most improved players on the World Tour and will be hoping to continue her form to score a first win over ElSherbini in the third match of the day.
Men’s World No.1 and defending champion Ali Farag and World No.5 Mazen Hesham will close out the day’s play in a repeat of one of last year’s quarter final matches. Farag came through that match but admitted afterwards that he “never feels comfortable” against Hesham and knows the quality that he possesses. Hesham reached the British Open semi-finals in 2022 and will be determined to reach the last four again this year.
