EVENING:
Matthew marches on as Miguel takes out Ramy

The evening session saw two big men’s upsets – at the University Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez came from a game down to beat former BO champion Ramy Ashour, the eighth seed who won the Grasshopper before missing El Gouna, while at the Arena three-time champion Nick Matthew kept his playing career going with a tremendous five game win over fifth seeds Tarek Momen.

“That was my final,” admitted Matthew afterwards, “where’s the trophy, it feels like I’ve won the tournament!”

There was a further upset in the women’s draw as Egyptian qualifier Yathreb Adel beat Joshne Chinappa in straight games, making it fourteen seeds, Adel and Amanda Sobhy in the last sixteen.

AFTERNOON:
Top seed survives as Marche and Kandra qualify for last 16

No upsets in the opening session of play on the Glass Court at the Airco Arena as Nour El Sherbini, Gregory Gaultier and Nour El Tayeb all eased through in three games, but top seed Mohamed ElShorbagy had to fight back from two games down to beat Diego Elias.

“To be at the top in any sport, it’s not always about playing your best,” said the reigning world #1 and world champion, “sometimes you just have to find a way to win, and that’s what I did today …”

At the University of Hull three courts were in play, and there were two significant upsets as qualifiers Gregoire Marche and Raphael Kandra both won through, Marche beating Ryan Cuskelly in five, Kandra with an impressive three-nil against Mathieu Castagnet.

Amanda Sobhy caused the first seeding upset in the women’s draw as she beat Olivia Blatchford in an all-American tussle.
