Day FIVE : Quarter-Finals

Defending champions out as Perry and Gohar produce massive upsets

Both defending champions were beaten on quarter-finals day at the University of Hull as England’s Sarah-Jane Perry and Egypt’s Nouran Gohar produced massive upsets.

The day started with an all-Egyptian clash as Raneem El Welily and Nouran Gohar reprised last month’s El Gouna Open final, but this time Gohar was a straight-games winner as the world #1’s 15-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Married couple Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb both reached their first British Open semis before Paul Coll survived a five-game marathon against Mazen Hesham.

Camille Serme was tested by Nele Gilis but edged through in three, then Karim Abdel Gawad let match balls slip in the third and fourth games before finally seeing off Simon Rosner 11-9 in the fifth.

The last two matches featured the defending champions – Nour El Sherbini, after starting strongly, was sensationally beaten in four games by England’s Sarah-Jane Perry, and Mohamed  ElShorbagy avenged his defeat in last year’s final with a three-nil win over Miguel Rodriguez.
