Evening : Top seed safely through as home hopes exit

The evening session at The Rep wasn’t a good one for the home players as Jasmine Hutton, Simon Herbert and Curtis Malik all exited. Hutton lost out a see-saw tussle against France’s Melissa Alves, unable to capitalise on a 10-7 lead in the fifth. Wildcard Herbert lost out to Youssef Soliman in three well-contested games, as did Malik against Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng. Top seed Mostafa Asal made quick work of Hong Kong’s Alex Lau.

There were dramatic matches at Solihull Arden – Salma Hany was blitzed 11-0 in the first by Torrie Malik, but fought back – saving a match ball in the fourth before progressing in five, while world junior champion Mohamad Zakaria saved two game balls to avoid a fifth game against Abhay Singh. France’s sixth seed Victor Crouin looked on the way out at 0-7 in the fifth against Kareem El Torkey, but somehow found a way back in to level at 8-all and take the match 11-9. Amanda Sobhy – playing her 500th PSA match – beat Georgia Adderley,

Afternoon : Vargas downs former champ ElShorbagy, Egyptian trio advance at Solihull Arden

The afternoon session at Solihull Arden saw three Egyptians advance, as Fayrouz Aboelkheir and Rowan Elaraby both beat fellow Egyptians in straight games to reach Round Three, and they were joined by qualifier Adam Hawal, who felled the first seed as he beat France’s Gregoire Marche in four games.

At the Rep Belgium’s Tinne Gilis was tested in the opening match, needing five games to gets past unseeded Egyptian Nardine Garas. Women’s top seed Hania El Hammamy and men’s defending champion Diego Elias both progressed comfortably in straight games.

The final match at the Rep saw Colombia’s Juan Vargas produce a huge upset as he fought back from one-two down to beat three-time champion Mohamed ElShorgagy.
