In the News: New Zealand Media Reacts to Coll’s Historic Triumph

Paul Coll’s historic Allam British Open triumph has resulted in major mainstream coverage in his native New Zealand.

Greymouth-born Coll became the first male kiwi ever to win the prestigious British Open yesterday after he ended a 13-match losing run against top seed Ali Farag, which followed a semi-final victory against World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy.

Speaking after securing his first major PSA title, Coll said: “It’s been a long journey for myself. Coming right from juniors, I had to leave home at a young age.

“This moment right here makes it all worth it. My parents were supposed to be here, but due to COVID they can’t travel, so I’m just super proud of this moment. I just want to thank everyone from New Zealand and everyone who’s helped me over my career to get to this stage.

“There’s too many people to single out, but thank you all. I love you all. Thank you to the whole of New Zealand for getting up at 2am and watching.”

The 29-year-old’s win has gone down a storm back home in New Zealand and we’ve taken a look at some of the reaction from there and elsewhere :
