Evening : Elenein downs Makin as Gina stops Siva
There was no shortage of drama – and upsets – in the evening session. It started calmly enough as four-time champion Nour ElSherbini eased past Chan Sin Yuk, leaving three matches featuring home interest to complete the round.
Declan James couldn’t make much of an impression on two-time champion Paul Coll, but Gina Kennedy made a superb start to go two up over Siva Subramaniam. Gina had a match ball in the third and although that was saved, she was dominant in the fourth. Aly Abou Eleinen completed the quarter-final lineup, putting in a superb – at times exhibition-like -performance to take down fifth seed Joel Makin in straight games.
Afternoon : Yahyia downs Marwan after 37-minute opening game
The final match of the afternoon produced the only upset as Egypt’s Yahyia Elnawasany took down eighth seed Marwan ElShorbagy, taking the next three games after losing a 37-minute opening game 19-21.
Earlier both Satomi Watanabe and Olivia Weaver won through to the quarter-finals after losing their opening games, to Nele Gilis and Marina Stefanoni, while Karim Abdel Gawad reached his fourth British Open quarter-final – in 14 appearances – with a straight-games win over Leonel Cardenas.
