Evening : World Champions progress as Sobhy stuns Gilis
The evening session saw newly-crowned World Champions Amina Orfi and Mostafa Asal despatch Melissa Alves and Eain Yow Ng in straight games – Alves retiring injured in the second – while World Junior Champion Mohamad Zakaria ended the run of Juan Vargas, also in straight games, to reach his first Diamond level quarter-final.
In between those, USA’s Amanda Sobhy produced the upset of the day as she beat eighth seed Tinne Gilis, again in straight games.
Afternoon : Hammamy and Elias win World Junior Finals reprises
The day opened with Fayrouz Aboelkheir coming from a game down to beat fellow Egyptian Salma Hany, then in the first men’s match Victor Crouin established a 7-0 lead in the opening game against qualifier Adam Hawal. Crouin had won from 0-7 down in his last game in the previous round, and although Hawal briefly threatened a similar comeback the Frenchman steadied to run out the winner in three games.
Next up were two repeats of World Junior finals of a decade ago. Women’s top seed Hania El Hammamy got the better of Rowan Elaraby in three games after edging a close opener and profiting from as run of unforced errors from Elaraby to finish the third. Defending men’s champion Diego Elias reprised his world junior win over Youssef Soliman, who had to retire injured early in the second game.
